The Old Mill girls basketball team used one final surge to finish off Southern last night.
Tiara Bolden scored eight of her team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Patriots to a 67-57 win over the Bulldogs. She scored six points during a decisive, 13-2 run in the first three minutes of the quarter that turned a four-point game into a 15-point Old Mill lead with five minutes left.
“She plays with a lot of energy, and she was all over the floor tonight,” Old Mill coach Craig White said. “If she continues to do that, it’s going to make us better.”
The Patriots built a 12-point lead in the second quarter, only to see the Bulldogs get within five late in the first half. Old Mill pushed the lead to 10 in the third, but Southern rallied again and was within four after three.
“We switched our defense and got three or four turnovers right away,” Southern coach Linda Kilpatrick said.
“We didn’t capitalize on all of them, but we did get the turnovers, and that makes me happy.”
Bolden scored four points during an 11-0 run to start the fourth to make it 56-41. She scored four more points off steals over the next two minutes to ruin any chance of a Southern comeback.
“She knew we needed her to step up this year,” White said. “It’s just working out right now that she’s doing it a little quicker than we expected.”
Bolden added seven steals and four assists and was one of three Patriot starters in double figures. Oakland Mills transfer Monet Nias followed with 13 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. She had six points in the fourth and a bulk of her rebounds over the final minutes.
“She was able to rebound the ball on the last few trips down the floor and kept us in the game as far as rebounding and getting the ball to the basket,” White said.
Breonna Pinkcett added 11 points for Old Mill, including the first three points of the fourth quarter to get the Patriots going on the final run. She also scored six points in the second quarter when the Patriots took the lead for good after trailing by a point after the first.
Raquelle Jones went scoreless in the first half, but rebounded nicely in the second and led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 11 rebounds. She scored 13 of Southern’s 17 third-quarter points.
Brooke Echard added 14 points and eight rebounds for Southern (0-3), which will face Arundel on Friday to cap a tough first week that included games with Annapolis and Dunbar.
“I told them before the season that we could very easily be 0-4 to start the season,” Kilpatrick said. “We’ll get it together. Don’t count us out. Winning is nice, but losing shows your character.”
